The decision to transfer a patient to another hospital must be made by the responsible consultant, in conjunction with consultant colleagues from relevant specialties in both the referring and receiving hospitals [ 15 ]. Ideally, the most appropriate receiving hospital is chosen and the patient or relatives agree with the transfer.
